Alexandria, VA-based BREAD & CHOCOLATE (founded 1981) has increased by 1 unit, from 3 to 4 (33% growth) and entered into MD.  These quick serve bakery/cafes are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a $4-$10+ per person check average.  Locations serve beer and wine and offer seating for 10-20.  Catering and delivery services are available.  The cafes are in DC, MD, and VA.

Massachusetts-based STONE HEARTH PIZZA CO (founded 2005) has increased by 1 unit, from 3 to 4 (33% growth).  The restaurants are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $8-$20 and beer and wine are served.  Seating is for about 60.  All locations are in MA.

JIM ‘N NICK’S BAR-B-Q based in Vestavia Hills, AL (founded 1985) has increased by 2 units, from 27 to 29 (7% growth).  These are family/casual BBQ restaurants with full bar and seating for around 100.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $6-$12.  Catering and delivery services are available.  Trading areas are AL, CO, FL, GA, NC, SC and TN.

Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts

Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.

Los Angeles, CA-based THE VEGGIE GRILL has increased by 2 units, from 7 to 9 (29% growth) and entered into OR.  This is a fast casual vegetarian concept, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person price range is $6-$12.  Beer and wine are served and seating is for about 80.  The restaurants are located in CA and OR.

FIVE STAR PIZZA of Ocala, FL has increased by 4 units, from 13 to 17 (31% growth).  These are take-out restaurants serving lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $3-$8.  Delivery is offered.  Locations are in FL and GA.

FRANK’S GRILL of Houston, TX has increased by 2 units, from 5 to 7 (40% growth).  These are family/casual restaurants with seating for around 70.  Meal periods are breakfast and lunch.  Per person check average is around $6-$12. ! Locations are family owned and operated.  All units are in TX.

GHIRARDELLI CHOCOLATE based in San Leandro, CA (founded 1852) has increased by 3 units, from 15 to 18 (20% growth) and expanded into AL.  These are mostly take-out stores with limited seating.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $3-$8.  Locations are in AL, CA, FL, IL, NV and WI.

Encino, CA-based MENCHIE’S FROZEN YOGURT has increased by 152 units, from 99 to 251 (154% growth) and entered into AB, AK, BC, IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, MS, NJ, NL, NM, NY, OK, OR, PA, VA, WI, Japan, Australia, Guam, Jordan, and Puerto Rico.  These quick serve frozen yogurt shops are open for lunch and dinner hours, with a $2-$6 per person price range.  Limited seating is available.  Locations are franchised and trade in AB, AK, AZ, BC, CA, CO, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NL, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, ON, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, Japan, Australia, Guam, Jordan, and Puerto Rico.  We featured this concept on 8/16/11 (68% growth).

New York, NY-based TWO BOOTS PIZZA (founded 1987) has increased by 1 unit, from 11 to 12 (9% growth).  This is a family/casual pizzeria concept, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $6-$15+, serving full bar.  A few locations are quick serve.  Average seating is for about 100.  Catering, private party, delivery, and online ordering services are available.  Trading areas are CA, CT, MD, and NY.  We last featured this concept on 6/14/11 (10% growth).

San Diego, CA-based GARDEN FRESH RESTAURANT CORP(founded 1978) has increased by 3 units for the Sweet Tomatoes concept, from 84 to 87 (4% concept growth).  The company also operates the 40-unit Souplantation concept.  Overall company increase was from 124 to 127 (2% growth).  These are soup and salad buffet restaurants, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person price range is $6-$12 and seating is for about 250.  Catering is available.  Trading areas are AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, KS, MO, NC, NM, NV, OR, TX, UT, and WA.  We wrote about this concept on 7/12/11 (2% growth) and on 12/6/11 (5% growth).

Omaha, NE-based PEPPERJAX GRILL (founded 2002) has increased by 1 unit, from 9 to 10 (11% growth).  This fast casual sandwich concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$10 per person price range.  Locations serve beer and seat around 100.  Trading areas are KS and NE.  We wrote about this concept on 4/12/11 (13% growth).
